The Orlando family was extremely influential in 19th – early 20th century Italy and built their reputation on the shipbuilding and iron industry. From roots in Sicily, Luigi Orlando (1814 – 1898) and his brothers moved to Genoa in 1848 and played a major role along with Garibaldi in the national fight for Italian political independence.
In their newly established shipyard in Livorno they built warships and submarines for the Italian Navy and other foreign Navies. In the following years they expanded to other sectors of the iron and steel industry with many plants and foundries in Italy and abroad.
